Shirley Sports & Social Association

Notice of Annual General Meeting
To be held in St. Michael's Church 26th January 2011 at 7.30 pm

As alluded to in my previous correspondence, the Shirley Sports & Social Association is approaching a crossroad in its life, where we either need to recruit a number of new committee members or the Association will fail to meet the requirements of its constitution and will be forced to be dissolved. At the next AGM, there are at least 5 members of the current committee who will be resigning. Amongst them will be myself, so we will be looking for a new Chairman to take the Association forward and maintain the good work that has been carried out in the past.

In a village of this size, attracting a relatively large number of people onto the management committee, is a daunting task, but hopefully there is sufficient interest within the village to keep what is a well respected and well used sports facility operational. Also, to rejuvenate some of the social activities that have fallen by the wayside over the last couple of years. In fairness to the existing committee and myself, there have been good reasons why this is the case, but once your eye is off the ball, it's sometimes difficult to refocus, hence why a fairly clean start would be good for the Association.

I therefore urge that anyone who is interested in keeping the Association afloat should attend the AGM and learn more about how to go forward. Interested parties should be at least 18 years old. We also welcome interest from outside the village, provided the committee at least 75% of Shirley residents. Perhaps some of the previous committee members may be interested in another term of office, just to bring some additional eperience to a predominantly new committee, even if only for a year.

If you are interested in becoming part of the Shirley Sports & Social Association, please feel free to contact me on 01335 360388 before the AGM, as if there is insufficient interest on the night, under the terms of the constitution, we will move to dissolve the Association effective from 26th January 2011. If, as a desperate last resort, we have to dissolve the Association, the assets will be transferred to the Parish Council or any other Charitable Organisation as agreed with the Parish Council. In the event that the Parish Council does not wish to continue with the upkeep of the sports field, It will be returned to the estate and lost forever.

I sincerely hope that this will not be the case and we can enjoy our sports field and other social activities for many years to come.
